Rates & Policies
Sliding scale
I use a sliding scale to calculate the rate of a one-hour philosophical counseling session for you. A session costs between $75 and $150, depending on your household income.
To calculate your rate, take your household income (including your income and that of your significant other or spouse, if relevant) and multiply by .1%. So, if your household income is $80,000 a year, multiply by .001, and your rate is $80 for an hour-long session.
I have some student spots available at a discounted student rate of $50/hr. These fill up quickly, and there may be a waiting list. But please ask me about it if you are a student in need of the discounted rate.
Philosophical counseling is not covered by health insurance at this time.
How often do we meet and for how long?
I recommend starting with three sessions (once a week) to give us enough time to dive into the process and unpack the immediate issues you want to discuss. You can expect to experience movement in your thinking and your choices in these first weeks. You'll be reflecting on your difficulties and your deepest values, calling old assumptions into question, trying on new perspectives, imagining new futures, and experimenting with some new insights in practice.
After the third session, we can pause, take stock, and map out the longer view of the big questions you'd like to pursue and what practical trajectory will help you to create lasting change in your life. We can come up with a plan together about the frequency of visits that is right for you.
Generally, it is when folks get to a point where they've got some new clarity about their priorities, can verbalize why they're important and how they hang together, and have a plan to put them into practice, that they are ready to transition to less frequent check-in meetings. But everyone has a different pace, so we will find the plan that works best for you.
Where do we meet?
All philosophical counseling sessions have moved to Zoom. I recommend that you find a quiet and private place on your end to talk, so you can speak freely during our sessions with minimal interruptions. (I do get that interruptions sometimes happen — full disclosure, I have a dog who sometimes likes to say hello — we just want to minimize them so you can focus on you!)
Cancellation policy
If you cancel your session less than 24 hours in advance, I will not be able to fill your spot and will have to charge you for your session. If you need to cancel, please do so as far in advance as possible (a week in advance is preferred). If you need to shift the time of your session, I may be able to accommodate, so please ask before cancelling.
Age restriction
At this time, I offer philosophical counseling for adults (who are at least 18 years of age). I will consider younger clients from the gymnastics community (one of my specialty communities) on a case-by-case basis.
Payment
Directly after our session, I will email you a PayPal invoice that allows you to pay by credit card online. Please pay your invoice within 24 hours.
