Dear Curious Souls,
Welcome to spring! Through the winter at Curious Soul we've been tackling the problem of the pervasive anger at the center of our public discourses and searching for ways to shift gears toward collaborative problem solving. In our spring workshop in April, we'll be studying specific communicative tools that can help us in difficult discussions, both political and personal. Marshall Rosenberg, through his bestselling book Nonviolent Communication, will lead us through practical strategies that help us to identify the emotions and needs at the bottom of our words, and teach us how we might express ourselves in clearer and more authentic ways. He will also lead us through strategies for listening carefully to others in ways that allow us to be fully "present," understand others with greater empathy (rather than react defensively), and recognize the common humanity that we share. For those who have taken previous workshops at Curious Soul, I think you will find points of connection between the practical strategies in Nonviolent Communication and more theoretical discussions we've had surrounding Buddhism and compassion, Feminist Ethics and the importance of building care, trust, and empathy in relationships, Stoic and Existential prompts to take responsibility for our own reactions to others, and Martin Buber's vision of approaching the other as "Thou" and not "It." For those new to Curious Soul, this workshops is a great way to get started! Nonviolent Communication is an accessible and totally practical study for everyday life! Come with us to:
Saturdays, April 10, 17, 24 1:00-3:00 Pacific Time, via Zoom Learn more and register here.
